“In stock” in the admin does not always mean the selected variant is available to that online buyer. Check the exact variant’s available quantity at a location that can fulfil online orders, then check publication, market context and any subscription choice.
Start with the variant and inventory state
Open the failing product URL and record the selected variant. Compare that variant in Shopify, not the product’s combined stock. On-hand stock can include committed or unavailable units; incoming stock is not yet available. Do not change inventory quantities until the records are understood.
| Check | If it fails | If it passes |
|---|---|---|
| Correct variant has available stock | Investigate reservations, stock state or the wrong selected variant | Check where the stock is held |
| Stocked location fulfils online orders | Review fulfilment configuration and allocation | Check publication and buyer context |
| Product is available to this online market | Review channel/market publication | Compare ordinary and subscription purchases |
| Same case works in a clean theme preview | Investigate shared configuration or app behaviour | Investigate current theme/product-form integration |
Why total stock can be misleading
Illustrative example: a variant has five units in a retail-only location and zero at the location supplying online orders. The total is five, but the online buying route may have no sellable stock. Correct the allocation or fulfilment configuration to match the real operation; do not manufacture stock to make the button turn on.
Check that the product is active, published to the intended channel and available in the buyer’s market. Also distinguish a sold-out label from a later “cannot ship to this address” error. Shipping profiles and inventory availability are related operational checks, but those symptoms are not interchangeable.
When only subscriptions fail
Compare one-time and subscription purchases for the same variant, where both are offered. Record the selected selling plan, app, delivery schedule and whether the product/form is configured for that plan. If ordinary purchase works, investigate the selling-plan and app integration before concluding that the stock count is wrong.
Do not transfer subscriptions or uninstall the subscription app as a first test. Existing contracts and billing make that a separate scoped project. A theme-specific symptom can require product-form or JavaScript investigation rather than an inventory adjustment.
Keep a useful test record
Record the URL, variant ID, market, device/browser, available quantity by location, fulfilment status, selling plan and result in each preview. Repeat after the fix and check that adding to cart preserves the correct variant and plan. “Continue selling when out of stock” is a backorder policy decision, not a universal repair.
Our back-in-stock email guide addresses notifications; it does not establish whether a purchase is possible. For availability or subscription troubleshooting, send the test record and intended buying behaviour so configuration, theme and app work can be separated.
