How to Find Your Shopify Collaborator Request Code

Need to grant access to your Shopify store but not sure where to find the collaborator code? We get this question all the time from clients. So here’s a no-fluff guide to help you locate, enable, or disable that elusive 4-digit code. Screenshots not included here, but if you're struggling, hit us up—we’ve got your back.

What’s a Shopify Collaborator Request Code?

As a store owner, you can give another person—like a developer or partner—limited access to your store through what Shopify calls a “collaborator request.”

This is super useful for getting help with app issues, theme fixes, or backend tweaks. Collaborators can access specific parts of your store like Apps, Themes, Products, and so on—based on what you allow.

Now, when it comes to letting someone request access, you’ve got two choices:

  • Option A: Anyone can send you a request (meh, not very secure).
  • Option B: Only someone who knows your 4-digit collaborator access code can send a request (much better).

Note: As of December 2023, Shopify made it mandatory to use a collaborator code for all requests. Even if the admin lets you choose "Anyone can send a request," it’s ignored. The only exception? If the dev already has their app installed in your store. In 2024, the option was re-enabled, but the code still matters.

How to Find Your Shopify Collaborator Access Code

Here’s how to locate that magical 4-digit code:

  1. Go to your Shopify Admin.
  2. Click Settings > Users and permissions.
  3. Scroll down to the Collaborators section.
  4. You’ll see your code there. Click the copy icon and share it with your developer or partner.

Heads-up: You can’t create your own code manually—Shopify assigns it. But if you want a fresh one, just click "Generate new code". This instantly deactivates the old one.

Important: Sharing the code doesn’t give access. It just allows someone to send a request. You still need to approve it.

How to Enable or Disable the Collaborator Request Code

Want to change the settings? Here's how:

  1. Go to your Shopify Admin.
  2. Click Settings > Users and permissions.
  3. Scroll to the Collaborators section.
  4. Select one of the two options:
    • Anyone can send a collaborator request
    • Only people with a collaborator request code can send a request (recommended)

Even if you select the “Anyone can send” option, Shopify may still require the code depending on recent policy updates—so don’t skip this step.

Pro tip: Click "Generate new code" now and then to stay extra secure. Previous codes will become invalid, which helps keep your store safe.
